This meticulously researched book analyzes the institutional impediments to women’s success in the practice of law, detailing the challenges and roadblocks which underlie the high rates of attrition and low rates of partnership elevation for women lawyers. Ending the Gauntlet: Removing Barriers to Women's Success in the Law describes all aspects of law firm life including management, the assignment process, billable-hour demands, business development, compensation, mentoring, attrition and policies affecting work/family issues. Although the book is about women in law firms, the issues apply to any professional setting.
The book is the result of two years of research and author’s interviews with women lawyers and law firm managers from around the country. The author also draws extensively on a wide range of research across multiple disciplines in order to shed further light on the many topics addressed.
Ending the Gauntlet is particularly important reading for anyone in a position of management at a law firm. The issues addressed not only have a fundamental impact on the lives of women attorneys, but also apply to young lawyers of both genders who are entering the profession with an entirely different set of expectations than predecessor generations. The book provides a readable roadmap for implementing changes that are economically sound and critical to any law firm’s long-term success. Ending the Gauntlet offers concrete steps law firms can and should implement to decrease costly attrition and provide equal opportunities for all women to take their rightful place as equals in the legal profession.
